How to choose a generator for hire

With a variety of generators available for hire from Mr Plant Hire, Enfield, finding the right generator for your needs can get a little confusing.

There are petrol generators, diesel generators, portable generators, tow trailer generators and more to choose from, but what are the important things you should look for when choosing a generator?

Will the generator fulfil your power requirements?

The first and most important thing to know is whether the generator will power the equipment you need.

Identify what you will be running off the generators and how much power they require. Identify both the continuous/rated output and the maximum output, both of which should cover your equipment’s starting power requirements and which will usually be higher than the continual running requirements.with

If you plan to run more than one piece of equipment from a single generator, be sure to incorporate the running requirements of each piece of equipment.

Which fuel to choose?

What fuel do you want your generator to run on? At Mr Plant Hire, we have diesel and petrol generators for hire. Petrol is more flammable so may not be advisable for some purposes, and it isn’t very effective in cold conditions. Diesel is noisy and only really effective when run at heavy loads but does have a lower operating cost that petrol and a longer shelf life.

How sensitive is the equipment you’re powering up?

Do you need to protect the equipment you’re powering with the generator from power spikes and surges? If so, opt for a generator with Inverter technology or AVR that redistributes the spikes in power supply, making it appropriate for highly technical devices such as IT hardware.

Starting mechanisms

Automatic start, electric start or a pull-start generator. Which do you need? If your generator is responsible for turning on highway lighting at night time, automatic start would be more useful that a pull-start system that requires contractors or employees to be on site.

Topping up the tank

What size fuel tank do you need? How long will you be running the generator for and how regularly do you want to be topping up the tank? Do you want to be able to see how much fuel is left in the tank?

These are all important questions for you to consider to help you with finding the right generator for you.
