Fragile roofs found to be common cause of falls

With that in mind, a new short film was released online at the end of last year on the dangers of fragile roofs, made by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) with the assistance of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the co-operation of Working Well Together (WWT).

This ten minute film, ‘Fragile roofs – Fragile lives’ follows the “devastating effects” of falls through fragile roofs on four people and their families: www.youtube.com

PASMA cites a roofing firm which was taken to court in September last year for allowing its roofers to work without safety measures, and the HSE noted the lack of a scaffold. With the HSE considering scaffolding a “standard safety measure” for roofers in a case like this, it is vital that they are using the right type of tower and understand what makes for a safe one.
